Electricity consumption is increasing
Electricity consumption is influenced by a variety of factors. We know from experience that population growth and economic development influence electricity consumption to a significant degree. Electricity consumption in Switzerland has more than doubled since 1970. The evidence shows that over the last 20 years, a one percent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) produces an average rise of slightly more than one percent in electricity consumption. In general, this trend is expected to continue. Growth over the last few years has been concentrated above all in the services sector (computerization).
In addition to economic development, population growth results in an increase in electricity demand because more people require more electricity. In Switzerland, population growth is also linked to a rise in prosperity, which has an additional impact on the rise in demand for electricity. A higher standard of living stimulates consumption. For example, two television sets, several computers and a tumble dryer are standard today for a Swiss household. All these appliances increase the electricity consumed per household, not least because the lower electricity consumption of newer, more efficient appliances is offset by the rapidly increasing number of electronic appliances.
