Climate-friendly Electricity

Climate protection is a challenge for us all. Swiss electricity is virtually CO2-free. This is because the Swiss power plant fleet is based primarily on hydroelectricity, nuclear power and new renewable energies. We cannot undermine this advantage of our electricity production. Axpo's power plants also make a significant contribution to improving the climate situation in Switzerland. The Swiss power plant fleet is virtually emission-free, so that improvements in terms of reduced CO2 emissions from electricity generation are virtually impossible.

The proportion of power plants fired by fossil fuels (coal and gas) is generally higher abroad than in Switzerland (see chart). Countries with a high proportion of coal- or gas-fired thermal power plants therefore release a large volume of greenhouse gasses in the production of electricity. If we had to rely on electricity from these countries, this would defeat Swiss efforts at environmental protection. But the situation would be even worse if Switzerland were to build its own coal- or gas-fired power plants. Under present legislation, the emissions from such plants would have to be offset by high domestic prices. Thermal plants are therefore unthinkable in environmental and economic terms.
