Calancasca AG
High-pressure storage power station in the Calanca Valley
Calancasca AG, which is based in Roveredo (GR), is co-owned in equal stakes by Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG and Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Laufenburg AG.
The facilities at the Calancasca AG power station were built between 1949 and 1951. The 54 m high dam, a gravity dam in the narrow gorge of the Calancasca near Weiler Molina (Buseno local authority), forms the Molina weekly balancing reservoir with a top water level of 686.75 m above sea level and a capacity of 640,000 m3. Water is collected flowing from the unglaciated catchment of the Calancasca below Valbella, over an area of 90 km2, and fed through the pressure tunnel/shaft of the two machine groups in the Sassello underground central station (Roveredo local authority) about 400 m below.
The mean annual production is 87m kWh, with 30m kWh generated in the cold half of the year and 57m kWh generated during the warm half of the year. The machine groups operate at full load (high-pressure run-of-river power station) when the snow melts.
The managerial mandate is held by Axpo Hydro Energy.
