Combined storage and pumped storage power station in the Tamina Valley
The Sarganserland (KSL) power stations, which were built between 1971 and 1978, is a 98.5% subsidiary of Axpo AG (the remaining 1.5% is held by the St. Gallen cantonal authority). The share capital is 50m francs. The KSL power stations are used to produce peak-load energy, adapted to meet consumption requirements, thanks to their rapid availability and their large output capacity (370 MW).
The mean annual production is 443m kWh. The two power station stages, Mapragg and Sarelli, use the water inflow from a catchment of around 160 km2 in the Weisstannen and Calfeisen Valleys and store this in the Gigerwald and Mapragg reservoirs. To facilitate repeated use, the water which is used to generate electricity can be pumped back from the Mapragg retaining basin to the Gigerwald reservoir during times when demand is low. The KSL reservoirs are a very popular destination for day-trippers in the summer.The managerial mandate is held by Axpo Hydro Energy.
