Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG (NOK)

Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke AG, NOK, is the leading producer of electricity in Switzerland. The electricity is produced using nuclear energy, hydroelectric energy and renewable energy. Together with the grid infrastructure of the participating cantons, CKW and EGL, NOK has the most important transmission and distribution network in Switzerland. In order to manage its power plants optimally, NOK is actively engaged in the trading of electricity on the international markets.

NOK was established in 1914 as a joint venture by nine cantons who together wanted to secure the supply of energy. NOK employs around 1,400 employees.

Hydropower
NOK is the largest producer of hydropower in Switzerland. NOK's hydropower plants are scattered throughout the entire Northeast of Switzerland, from Graubünden to the Hochrhein and Valais.

Nuclear energy
In addition to the river power plants and storage power plants, NOK's power plant fleet also includes nuclear power plants. NOK is the sole operator of the Beznau nuclear power plant and has significant holdings in the nuclear power plants at Gösgen and Leibstadt.

New energies
NOK is also betting on new energies. Together with CKW, EGL and Axpo, NOK wants to become the leading producer of electricity from new energy sources in Switzerland. The focus is on biomass, small hydropower and geothermal energy. These energy sources are largely weather-independent and can provide important base load electricity. NOK invests in selected companies and projects, and is also investigating wind power plants in attractive foreign locations.

New energies

Grids
The Grids division is responsible for distributing electricity at different voltage levels. NOK operates a 380/220 kV transmission grid for transporting large volumes of electricity over greater distances and a 110/50 kV distribution grid for cross-regional and a 16 kV grid for regional distribution.

Trading and Marketing
NOK's Trading and Marketing division is responsible for electricity trading, risk and portfolio management as well as providing services to customers in North-Eastern Switzerland via Axpo Vertrieb AG. In order to ensure that its power plant fleet is operated as economically as possible and to optimise the security of supply, NOK takes part in what is known as OTC trading (spot trading, over the counter).
