After rockfall in Tierfed (GL): stabilisation work completed

20.02.24 Following the rockfall at the end of January, the site of the Tierfed pumped storage plant operated by Kraftwerke Linth-Limmern AG has been made safe again. Thanks to the rapid response and good co-operation of all those involved, the impact of the natural event was limited. The Tierfed pumped storage plant will be out of operation for several months, but this will only have a minor impact on electricity production.

The rockfall on 23 January 2024 caused severe damage to the Tierfed pumped storage plant. The machine transformer and components of the high-voltage transmission system were particularly affected. The rockfall protection was also destroyed and the building shell of the shaft control centre was partially damaged. Small quantities of oil were also spilt into the Linth.

Thanks to the rapid response and good co-operation of the emergency services, the impact of the rockfall was limited. The Glarus fire brigade, the Canton of Glarus Environmental Protection and Energy Department, various natural hazard committees of the municipality of Glarus Süd and the canton as well as the cantonal police were involved.

The effects of the oil spill were minimised thanks to the rapid and comprehensive intervention of the oil spill response team. Extensive damage to surface waters was prevented.

Specialists restored the safety net against rockfall and carried out rock clearance in the demolition zone. The stabilisation work has now been completed.

Due to the extensive damage, operation of the Tierfed pumped storage plant will have to be interrupted for several months. However, this will only have a minor impact on the electricity production of Kraftwerke Linth-Limmern AG, as this interruption can be compensated for with other machine groups in the same system.
