Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a method for the connection-oriented transmission of data packets in an otherwise connectionless network along a previously established and "signaled" path. Compared to conventional technologies, Multiprotocol Label Switching together with a modern fibre-optic infrastructure offers numerous advantages. Individual data packets are processed and forwarded faster by simplified addressing with so-called labels. In addition, any data paths can be specified in the network and different physical and logical architectures can be mapped according to requirements.
