Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a method for connection-oriented transmission of data packets in an otherwise connectionless network along a previously established and "signalled" path. Compared to conventional technologies, Multiprotocol Label Switching, together with a modern fibre optic infrastructure, offers numerous advantages. Individual data packets are processed and forwarded more quickly due to the simplified addressing with so-called labels. In addition, the data paths can be specified in the network according to the customer's needs and, depending on the requirements, different physical and logical architectures can be mapped.
Ethernet is the industry standard for Layer 2 data network connections and supports various network topologies (point-to-point, point-to-multipoint or multipoint-to-multipoint). The Ethernet service of Axpo Systems is based on the MPLS infrastructure and thus offers additional security.
