Axpo subsidiary Volkswind inaugurates wind farm in France

11.10.2019 - Axpo, Switzerland's largest producer of renewable energy, is continuing to develop its wind power portfolio. Axpo subsidiary Volkswind has commissioned a 16-megawatt wind farm in Antezant-la-Chapelle, Western France.

The Antezant-la-Chapelle wind farm is located around 70 kilometres southeast of La Rochelle and consists of eight wind turbines with a capacity of 2 megawatts each. The turbines will produce around 44 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of around 10,000 average households. The Antezant-la-Chapelle region is exceptionally well suited to wind power. At 100 metres above ground, average wind speed is 6.5 metres per second.

In the wind power sector, Axpo focuses on the development and construction of wind turbines in the growing market of France. "France is currently the most exciting market for wind energy in Europe," says Christoph Sutter, Head of the New Energies Division at Axpo. "And our subsidiary Volkswind is among the key players in this market."

Volkswind is one of the leading wind energy producers in Europe and has been part of Axpo since 2015. The company's core business comprises the planning, development and construction of wind farms in Germany and France. Some of the wind farms built by Volkswind remain in Axpo's portfolio and some are resold to investors. To date, Volkswind has realised more than 70 wind farms with an installed capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts. Further parks with a total capacity of more than 3,000 megawatts are currently in the pipeline.
