KKB: Unit 2 back on the grid after maintenance work

13.09.21 - Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) has completed the overhaul of unit 2 and, following approval by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI), brought the plant back online over the weekend.

The main focus of the overhaul was on maintenance work, recurring tests and inspections, and the commissioning of new systems. In addition, integral system tests were carried out as usual. Of the total of 121 fuel elements, 20 were replaced by new ones and inserted into the reactor core.

During the restart, KKB will carry out further system tests and gradually resume power operation. Unit 2 will be back at full load (365 megawatts electrical power) in two to three days. Water vapour is visible above the turbine building (non-nuclear part of the plant) during the start-up of the plant. There is no danger to people or the environment.
