19.09.2025 | New Axpo video shows how organic waste is turned into energy and more

How does a banana end up in the socket?

The new video from Axpo Biomasse clearly shows how organic waste is turned into valuable energy and natural fertiliser – and why this is so important for our environment.

One thing is clear: if you want sustainable security of supply, there is no way around renewable energy sources. Most people think of hydropower, photovoltaics or wind energy. But fermentation plants are also becoming increasingly important. This is because they convert organic waste into valuable resources such as biogas, electricity and natural fertiliser.

How does it work? The new video from Axpo Biomasse shows exactly that. It explains step by step how food scraps, garden waste and other organic materials go through the process: from the delivery of the waste to fermentation, to the use of biogas as an energy source and the application of fertiliser on fields.

The video is now part of every plant tour. It provides an easy-to-understand overview of the most important areas of the fermentation plant and explains the natural cycle behind it. This enables visitors to understand the processes even better during the tour.

Another important point in the video is the correct separation of waste. Only if we separate our biowaste properly can it be turned into valuable energy. The video makes it clear that each and every one of us can help to protect our environment and shape a sustainable future. See how organic waste is turned into green energy and healthy soil, and be part of the solution for a future worth living.

Axpo Biomasse

Axpo Biomasse AG processes around 280,000 tonnes of biomass per year in its 15 fermentation plants and six composting sites. The organic waste is used to produce biogas, electricity, heat, natural fertiliser and compost. Axpo Biomasse AG produces a total of around 75 GWh of energy per year, which corresponds to the energy consumption of around 17,000 households.
