Axpo in Japan Shaping a climate-friendly future

About Us

Established in 2025, Axpo Japan is the newest addition to the Axpo Group’s global presence across more than 30 countries. Our mission is to support customer-oriented businesses by leveraging Axpo’s established trading, risk management, and optimisation capabilities.

Axpo is Switzerland’s largest producer of renewable energy and one of Europe’s leading energy trading companies. Our team in Japan combines local market insight with the capabilities of a global organisation active across Europe, North America and Asia.

In Japan, our aim is to support the country’s energy transition, strengthen supply stability and help customers manage an increasingly complex and volatile power market through solutions tailor-made to their needs.

Energy Solutions

Axpo is driven by a single purpose – to enable a sustainable future by providing innovative energy solutions. As Switzerland's largest electricity producer and an international leader in energy trading and the marketing of solar and wind power, Axpo combines the experience and expertise of around 7,500 employees who are driven by a passion for innovation, collaboration and impactful change. Using cutting-edge technologies, Axpo innovates to meet the evolving needs of our customers in more than 30 countries across Europe, North America and Asia.

Retail power

Axpo provides physical deliveries of extra high voltage electricity to industrial customers across Japan, excluding Okinawa, under its electricity retail license. The offering covers a wide range of tailored solutions designed to optimise energy portfolios and mitigate energy risks, including flexible structures adapted to individual customer needs, long‑term pricing options, and comprehensive hedging, market access, and portfolio management. It also incorporates fuel cost adjustment mechanisms, RE100‑compliant green menus based on power with non‑fossil certificates, and full balancing services.

Renewables

For nearly 20 years, Axpo has been at the forefront of the power purchase agreement (PPA) business, offering tailored on‑site and off‑site PPA solutions across markets worldwide. Axpo’s strength lies in structuring contracts that balance the procurement requirements of corporate offtakers with the bankability requirements of renewable energy projects. Through long‑term PPAs, Axpo enables corporate customers to secure price stability and long‑term access to green power, while supporting project developers with predictable cash flows that allow renewable energy projects to progress from concept to execution. This includes off‑site physical PPAs, support for FIT‑to‑FIP conversion, aggregation and balancing services, as well as price hedging solutions.

Wholesale power (電力卸売) and market access

Leveraging Axpo’s strong global trading network, Axpo Japan offers direct access to the wholesale market. Customers benefit from access to every major power exchange and fuel market across a wide range of maturities, both physical and financial, covering structured options, standard products, and OTC transactions. Over the years, Axpo has built substantial expertise in physical and financial risk management and trading, with customers and counterparties regularly recognising the quality of these services in the Energy Risk Commodity Rankings. This offering includes both short‑ and long‑term pricing solutions, as well as comprehensive risk management across multiple commodities such as power and fuels, addressing regional spread exposure, fuel cost adjustment hedging, and non‑fossil certification requirements.

BESS

Axpo provides tailored solutions for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), combining bankability‑focused project structuring with tolling agreements and financial transactions designed for operational deployment. By integrating these elements, Axpo enables BESS operators to manage price volatility and operational risks while maximising revenue opportunities and securing stable cash flows. Through these solutions, Axpo contributes to the stability of power supply in Japan in line with the growing penetration of renewable energy. As energy storage systems become increasingly essential for balancing supply and demand in Japan, Axpo offers both physical and financial tolling agreements supported by advanced optimisation expertise to maximise the value of BESS while ensuring project bankability. These arrangements range from full tolling structures to partial tolling models with shared upside, and include financial tolling solutions such as financial swaps.
