11.09.2025 | Working together to generate more green energy with properly separated organic waste

Small actions – big impact

Those who carefully separate organic waste are doing more than just recycling correctly. They are also making a valuable contribution to a sustainable energy future. Organic materials are turned into renewable energy and nutrient-rich natural fertiliser. And the best thing about it? It's child's play, as the new video from Axpo Biomasse shows.

Biowaste – it may sound unspectacular, but it's a real all-rounder. Every day, our kitchens, gardens and compost heaps produce a valuable raw material: organic matter that, when disposed of correctly, can be turned into sustainable energy and high-quality natural fertiliser. What does it take? A little mindfulness – and a willingness to separate organic waste correctly.

The calculation is simple: apple peel yes, plastic bags no. Coffee grounds yes, yoghurt pots no. Only what is truly organic can go in the green waste – foreign materials such as plastic, glass or metal are not allowed under any circumstances. This is the only way to exploit the full potential – for the environment and for sustainable energy production. And: cleanly separated organic waste is the key to a circular economy that works – and benefits us all.

Our new video vividly reminds us how easy it is to do good. It's relatable, tongue-in-cheek – and completely free of moralising. Because environmental protection doesn't start in the laboratory or on the political stage, but at home, when you look in the bin. Every peel, every crust of bread, every vegetable scrap counts.

Axpo Biomasse

Axpo Biomasse AG recycles around 280,000 tonnes of biomass per year in its 15 fermentation plants and six composting sites. The organic waste is used to produce biogas, electricity, heat, natural fertiliser and compost. Axpo Biomasse AG produces a total of around 75 GWh of energy per year, which corresponds to the energy consumption of around 17,000 households.
