Axpo starts work on 100th wind farm

02.10.25 - The construction of Axpo’s one hundredth wind farm, located in northwestern Germany’s Lower Saxony region, began today. On completion, the milestone project will generate enough sustainable electricity to meet the annual needs of around 12,000 four-person households.

Axpo and its subsidiary Volkswind marked the milestone event with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site, located in Uehrde municipality. The wind farm’s three modern Vestas turbines will have a combined capacity of 18.6 MW, with commissioning planned for autumn 2026. The turbines will feed around 48 million kilowatt-hours of electricity into the grid a year.

Axpo drives expansion of wind energy

Axpo’s Head of Wind and Volkswind Division CEO Katja Stommel said: “We’re truly delighted to be building our hundredth wind farm. This demonstrates our continuing commitment to the expansion of renewable energies. And it’s just the beginning.”

Since acquiring Volkswind in 2015, Axpo has significantly expanded its international wind activities. Today, the company operates around 600 wind turbines across 100 wind farms, saving several million tonnes of CO2 annually and supplying around 800,000 four-person households throughout Europe with climate-friendly electricity.

Axpo’s wind division and Volkswind subsidiary currently employ more than 200 people and continue to grow. Operating successfully throughout Germany and France, recent expansion into Finland, Romania, and Switzerland demonstrates the company’s ambition to become a wind power leader in Europe.

Axpo intends to significantly expand its wind power capacity over the coming years – both within Switzerland and through expansion into new European markets. As a Swiss energy company, Axpo is also focusing on the domestic market and plans to develop and implement wind projects throughout Switzerland. This dual approach of national anchoring and international expansion serves the overarching objective of increasing renewable energy supply and sustainably reducing CO₂ emissions, and thereby contribute to the energy transition.
