Axpo and EDP sign landmark agreement to optimise energy storage in Poland

01.07.2025 - Axpo in Poland and EDP Renewables, a global leader in renewable energy development, have signed a long-term agreement to optimise a 60 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), it was announced today. One of the first private-sector deals of its kind in the Polish market, it will support the development of a modern and flexible energy system in the country.

Under the agreement, Axpo will be responsible for commercial management and optimisation of the storage system, drawing on its extensive experience in optimising flexible assets across Europe. The revenue model, based on a floor and revenue-sharing structure, ensures financial predictability for EDP, provides Axpo with the flexibility to fully leverage the battery system’s market potential, and supports the stability of the Polish electricity grid.

The installation will be located in the Greater Poland region, also known as Wielkopolska. Scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2027, it will have a 60 MW capacity and be able to store up to 241 MWh of electricity.

BESS technology is still relatively new to both investors and financial institutions in Central and Eastern Europe. The partnership between Axpo and EDP is therefore an important step forwards for the energy storage market in the region. Early-stage projects such as this will be instrumental in setting benchmarks for the entire sector.

Mateusz Marczewski, Head of Origination and Member of the Management Board at Axpo in Poland emphasized: “The Polish energy market is maturing, with growing demand for greater system flexibility alongside increasing challenges such as photovoltaic price cannibalisation and rising balancing costs. Properly managed, energy storage systems can play a key role in mitigating these risks and stabilising our clients’ portfolios. Managing BESS is a complex and demanding endeavour, however. Achieving effective optimisation needs strong financial foundations and advanced operational and technological capabilities. With these competencies in place, BESS exposure has become a strategic component of Axpo Poland’s comprehensive offering for the years ahead.”

EDP Country Lead in Poland, Ireneusz Kulka, said: “This agreement with Axpo, which is a pioneering effort, marks a new chapter for EDP in Poland. In a market like the Polish, where the grid is still largely dependent on conventional power and flexibility remains limited, battery storage plays a critical role, enabling the integration of more renewable capacity while ensuring system stability.

This project is not only aligned with EDP’s long-term vision for energy transition, but also directly supports Poland’s evolving capacity market and grid modernisation efforts.”

Axpo has been present in the Polish market for almost 25 years, becoming one of the country’s largest independent energy dealers and offtakers of energy produced from renewable sources. In Poland, the company provides services to around 35,000 companies, implements large-scale photovoltaic projects, and develops energy storage facilities and biogas power plants.
