Axpo completes four large-scale solar plants in Spain

25.11.2025 – Axpo’s 200 MWp facility combining four solar parks in León province in Spain strengthens position as a leading developer of large-scale photovoltaic projects. 

Axpo has completed its flagship Vilecha solar complex in León province, following more than a year of construction. Located in the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes de Tejar, the facility comprises four 50 MWp photovoltaic plants and will start feeding clean energy into the national grid by the end of the first quarter of 2026. 

Clean and sustainable energy with local impact

Covering more than 360 hectares, the Vilecha complex includes the Valtarafon, Roteles, El Monte and La Fenera solar plants. Over 365,000 photovoltaic panels are mounted on tracking systems which optimise solar capture throughout the day. The facility will generate more than 377,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 100,000 people, and prevent the emission of 75,000 tonnes of CO₂ a year.

More than 600 professionals were involved in the construction process, 70 per cent of whom were employed by local companies. With approximately 50 per cent of the land used belonging to public entities, rental income will flow directly to local municipalities, supporting reinvestment in infrastructure, services and community initiatives.

Technical excellence and environmental commitment

The Vilecha project presented technical and coordination challenges. The simultaneous design of four solar plants with different terrain characteristics and a common connection to a 132 kV substation required a high level of engineering and planning expertise. Despite this complexity, however, the project was completed successfully and on schedule.

Head of Axpo's Solar Division Antoine Millioud said: “This is our first large-scale solar plant developed and built in Spain, and consolidates our presence in this important market. Such an achievement is testament to our highly effective team and a tried and tested approach that can be replicated in other European countries.”

Axpo integrated sustainability criteria into all phases of the project from the outset. Land of low agricultural and ecological value was chosen for the site, while an environmental protection programme includes monitoring local flora and fauna, pollination, revegetation with native species, and responsible waste management under circular economy principles. These measures demonstrate Axpo's commitment to an energy transition that safeguards both people and ecosystems.

Key player in European energy transition

The Vilecha solar complex represents a strategic milestone in Axpo's expansion into the Spanish photovoltaic market. Elsewhere in the country, the company is also constructing new solar plants in Zaragoza (La Muela, 13.5 MWp) and Córdoba (Almod, 32.5 MWp) to the same high standards of technical excellence and sustainability.
