Axpo and Heidelberg Materials Polska extend cooperation on power purchase

Axpo Polska has signed a new power sales contract with Heidelberg Materials Polska, a leader in the Polish cement market and one of the country’s largest producers of ready-mixed concrete and aggregates, it was announced today. The deal covers the purchase of electricity for all Heidelberg’s Materials concern production sites in Poland, which includes, among others, one of the Górażdże facilities – the largest cement plant in Europe.

A subsidiary of Switzerland’s Axpo Group, Axpo Polska has been working with the Heidelberg Materials Polska, part of international Heidelberg Materials group, since 2019. Their cooperation and partnership to date has resulted in the extension of the contract for further years. Axpo will purchase electricity for all Heidelberg’s Materials group production sites in Poland.

Axpo Polska Head of Origination and Board Member Paweł Wierzbicki said: “The extension of our long-term cooperation with such an important partner as Heidelberg Materials is confirmation of the client’s trust and the effectiveness of the business solutions we offer.

“We operate flexibly and are ready to adapt our solutions to the procurement strategies of our customers as well as market challenges. During times of legislative change, for example, we also provide energy expertise and advice. It’s really gratifying to know that our customers appreciate this”, he added.

Under the new agreement, the Heidelberg Materials Polska will purchase electricity from Axpo Polska to power facilities operated by three of its subsidiaries:

  • Górażdże Cement, operating two facilities: Heidelberg Materials’ largest and most modern cement plant in Europe, located at Górażdże near Opole in southwest Poland, and a grinding plant near Katowice.
  • Górażdże Kruszywa, producing natural aggregates from 17 mines in Poland.
  • Górażdże Beton, a leading ready-mixed concrete producer operating 40 plants located throughout the country.

Together, the three companies have over 60 production facilities in Poland and are significant consumers of electricity in the country.

Heidelberg Materials Polska Head of Logistics and Purchasing Jacek Żabski said: “Axpo Poland is an important business partner for us. In our relationship to date, we’ve been able to rely on the company's professionalism and flexibility in preparing solutions tailored to our needs. We are confident that this will continue in the years to come”.

Part of the Axpo Group, Axpo Polska has been present in the Polish market for 20 years and is one of the country’s largest independent offtakers of green energy. Clients benefit from tailor-made PPA and power supply solutions based on structured long-term contracts, power balancing and forecasting, property rights and guarantees of origin trading. The company also provides services to more than 30,000 companies in the SME sector and has expanded its offering to include photovoltaic and battery storage projects.
