Axpo achieves good half-year results in uncertain environment

In a challenging geopolitical environment, amid increasing uncertainty in capital and energy markets, the Axpo Group achieved good results in the first six months of the 2024/2025 financial year (1 October 2024 to 31 March 2025). Internationally, the company continued to operate successfully in more than 30 countries and across 40 markets. In Switzerland, Axpo delivered 40 per cent of the total electricity consumed, once again making a significant contribution to a secure and low-carbon electricity supply.

CO2-neutral emergency preparedness: Axpo wins contract for reserve power plant

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) today awarded Axpo the contract to build and operate a reserve power plant in the municipality of Muttenz, located in the northern canton of Basel-Landschaft. Using CO2-neutral fuels, the plant will operate in emergencies only to stabilise the electricity supply in the event of power shortages. Axpo will thus make another substantial investment in Switzerland's security of supply.

Axpo signs route-to-market contract to support cPPA between Auchan and GoldenPeaks Capital

The contract signed by Axpo will help power French multinational Auchan’s retail network in Poland, it was announced today. The agreement supports a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (cPPA) between Auchan and GoldenPeaks Capital. Under the cPPA, approximately 115 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green electricity will be supplied annually from solar farms owned by GoldenPeaks Capital, helping Auchan achieve its sustainability commitments.

Axpo and MOSOLF to build one of Europe’s largest solar car park canopy installations

Axpo and the MOSOLF Group, one of the leading system service providers to the automotive industry, are joining forces to build one of the largest solar car park canopy installations in Europe. The project, which was announced today, will be realised at MOSOLF’s site in Kippenheim, southern Germany. Covering an area of 109,000 square metres – roughly the size of 15 football pitches – the state-of-the-art photovoltaic system will feature over 54,000 solar modules with a total capacity of up to 24 megawatt peak (MWp).

Axpo and the Swedish electricity retail company Falu Energi & Vatten AB have signed an agreement for the supply of power balancing services, physical delivery and financial electricity trading, it was announced today. The agreement, which took effect in February 2025, covers the company’s annual energy sales of around 300 GWh and the generation of approximately 70 GWh of electricity a year.

Axpo publishes white paper on wind energy

Switzerland has so far made limited use of its wind energy potential – even though wind power could contribute up to 10 terawatt hours of electricity annually. In a new white paper published today, Axpo explores how wind energy can become a crucial pillar of a secure and renewable electricity supply – particularly during the winter months. More than 60 per cent of potential wind production would occur in the coldest and most energy-intensive season. Wind energy should therefore form an integral part of Switzerland’s future energy mix.

Axpo launches wind measurements at Tannenberg

Following the start of wind measurements at Flumserberg, Axpo is now also assessing the wind energy potential at Tannenberg, located in the municipalities of Waldkirch and Andwil in the canton of St. Gallen. As a first step, a 125-metre wind measurement mast will be installed on Wednesday, 16 April. The mast will collect precise data on wind conditions, weather patterns and bat activity to enable a thorough feasibility assessment for a potential wind farm.

Start of construction of underground cabling from Langacher to Sins (Canton Zug)

To ensure the future energy supply, Axpo is increasing the operating voltage of its power lines in the Canton Zug from 50 to 110 kilovolts (kV). This will increase transmission capacities and reduce transmission losses. As part of this project, the existing line between the Langacher and Sins substations will be laid in the ground. Construction work will start at the end of March 2025.

Axpo in dialogue with local communities on potential wind farm at Dreibündenstein

Switzerland needs more renewable energy, particularly in winter. Axpo is therefore initiating preliminary assessments for a potential wind farm in the Dreibündenstein area, in the canton of Graubünden, it was announced today. To this end, Axpo engaged with the local population through two information events. The next steps include feasibility assessments and wind measurements, with a wind measurement mast set to be installed in the coming months.

Axpo AGM approves amendment to Articles of Association and elects new board director

At today's Annual General Meeting of Axpo Holding AG, shareholders approved all Board of Directors proposals. They also adopted an amendment to the Articles of Association proposed by the canton of Aargau that requires annual approval of Board of Directors and Executive Board remuneration by the AGM. This provision was part of a proposed new shareholders agreement set to come into force in 2025 but rejected last year by voters in Schaffhausen canton. The proposal - also submitted by the Canton of Aargau to create a profit reserve instead of distributing a special dividend was rejected. Martin Bäumle was elected to the Board of Directors as successor to Roger Wüthrich-Hasenböhler.

Axpo and Borealis sign two PPAs for renewable electricity sourced and consumed in Belgium

Axpo and Borealis, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions, signed two new long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). Over the past four years, Axpo and Borealis have signed several long-term deals in Belgium as well as in Sweden and Finland. The two new PPAs will see Axpo deliver more than 900 GWh of wind power procured from Vleemo nv, a Flemish energy company specialising in sustainable wind power projects. The long-term agreements run until the end of 2030 and end of 2035, respectively, with delivery starting in 2026.

Pradapunt: Concession application for new hydroelectric power plant

The ‘Wasserkraft Plessur’ project consortium has submitted the concession application for the new Pradapunt hydroelectric power plant to the municipality of Arosa (GR). Axpo and consortium partners Arosa Energie and IBC Energie Wasser Chur plan to invest around CHF 80 million in the project, thereby reaffirming their commitment to the expansion of renewable energies in Switzerland. The new power plant could supply around 10,000 households with clean energy.

Axpo has signed a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) with Petrol, the largest energy company in Slovenia, it was announced today. The five-year deal is Axpo’s second PPA in Slovenia and the first in the country that will deliver physical power to one of Petrol’s end customers. Under the agreement, Axpo will supply electricity to Petrol, a major energy distributor and a leading energy market player in South Eastern Europe. The power will be used to support the company’s core activities.

Axpo enters biomethane market in Italy

Axpo has given the green light to its first biomethane project in Italy, it was announced today. Located in the southern region of Basilicata, the plant will produce approximately 45 GWh of renewable energy a year and is expected to start operations by the end of 2025. The plant will be constructed in the municipality of Grottole and mainly use agricultural waste from neighbouring farms to produce carbon-neutral green gas. This will then be fed into Italy’s national gas network.

Gigerwald dam facility: Renovation work resumed

In September 2022, Axpo and Kraftwerke Sarganserland AG (KSL) interrupted the comprehensive refurbishment work on the Gigerwald dam facility in Calfeisen Valley and postponed it for two years. The reason behind this decision was the scarcity of electricity during the winter months of 2022/23. The refurbishment work is now back on track. This work is essential for the safe, long-term operation of the facility and the reservoir must be entirely emptied.

Axpo enters biomethane market in Portugal

Axpo has launched a biomethane project in Portugal that will use agricultural waste to produce more than 15 gigawatt hours of renewable energy a year. Axpo subsidiary Goldenergy, the country’s only energy provider to exclusively sell green electricity and gas, will purchase the plant’s entire production and inject it into Portugal’s natural gas network. The facility is due to commence operations in late 2025.

Switzerland needs more electricity to achieve its climate goals. In order for the expansion of renewable energies to become a reality, we need a clear Yes to the draft of the new electricity law on 9 June. To further strengthen security of supply, Axpo has decided to clarify the technical feasibility of operating the Beznau nuclear power plant beyond 60 years. Axpo has also responded to the federal government’s tender (which ends today) and submitted a project for a reserve power plant for emergencies.

Following extensive investigations, Axpo has decided to discontinue its planned solar project in Glarus Süd. The reasons behind this decision are natural hazards, limited environmental compatibility and low energy yield. Axpo and the municipality of Glarus Süd regret this decision. Axpo will continue to invest in sustainable forms of energy and drive its Alpine projects forward.

Axpo joins hydrogen transport project in France

Axpo is investing in a hydrogen production and distribution initiative to power the transportation sector in France’s Arve Valley, in Haute-Savoie, it was announced today. The “Arve Hydrogène Mobilité” project (Arv’Hy) will see hydrogen-powered vehicles filling up at an H2 service station from the first quarter of 2025. The project is supported by a number of partners, including Atawey, a pioneer in the development of H2 filling stations, and Jean Lain Mobilités, a major distributor of vehicles in the French Alps, including hydrogen-fuelled cars.

Axpo and SGV plan hydrogen passenger vessel on Lake Lucerne

Axpo is participating in the H2Uri company in Bürglen, central Switzerland. The regionally produced hydrogen will be used to power a passenger vessel on nearby Lake Lucerne, operated by the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (SGV) AG, it was announced today. Axpo joins major green hydrogen project in Italy

Axpo is joining a large-scale green hydrogen project in the Abruzzo region of Italy, it was announced today. Using existing industrial facilities in Corfinio, Axpo is partnering with Infinite Green Energy (IGE), which initiated the project, to deliver up to 12 tonnes of hydrogen a day to help decarbonise customers’ operations in so-called ‘hard-to-abate’ industrial and transportation sectors. The project includes a 30MW electrolyser powered by a 45MWp solar plant, making it one of the largest hydrogen plants in Italy.

Axpo opens its first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden

The commissioning of Axpo’s first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden, announced today, marks the latest milestone in the expansion of its battery business. The 20MW/20MWh plant, connected to the electricity grid by local energy company Landskrona Energi, follows several projects in Switzerland and Europe. The new facility was officially inaugurated on 12 February 2024 at a ceremony attended by representatives from politics and business.
