08.07.2025 - The Aare river has cooled down. Axpo has therefore restarted both units of the Beznau Nuclear Power Plant. Water temperatures will continue to be monitored.
Since Tuesday evening, the Beznau Nuclear Power Plant is again generating electricity at full capacity. The restart was approved by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and carried out in coordination with the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI).
Due to elevated river water temperatures, Axpo had previously reduced the output of both reactor units at the Beznau plant and subsequently shut them down one after the other. This precaution was taken to protect the Aare ecosystem and ensure compliance with strict environmental regulations. The aim is to avoid excessive warming of the already warm river during hot summer periods, thereby protecting local flora and fauna from additional stress. The power reduction and shutdown measures were implemented in accordance with directives issued by the SFOE.
Axpo will continue to monitor the Aare’s water temperatures.
