From power to green gas: Axpo supports e-methane producer TURN2X

15.10.2025 – Axpo has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with clean-tech pioneer TURN2X for the industrial-scale production of green hydrogen and e-methane in Spain. The innovative partnership marks significant progress in the decarbonisation of industries that are difficult to electrify and strengthens Europe's energy independence.

Green fuels are essential for decarbonisation. Axpo has signed an innovative power purchase agreement (PPA) for the production of green hydrogen with the clean-tech pioneer TURN2X in Spain. Under the agreement, Axpo will supply renewable electricity generated by independent power producer Aquila Clean Energy to operate a module developed by TURN2X, which will produce the green fuel. For the energy transition in Spain, this unprecedented milestone marks significant progress towards the decarbonisation of industries that are difficult to electrify and the achievement of European climate targets. It also strengthens Europe's energy independence.

Green electricity from Axpo

The TURN2X clean technology enables the production on an industrial scale of renewable natural gas (RNG) from hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide. In 2019, its first pilot plant fed into the German gas grid, with the first commercial plant inaugurated in the Spanish region of Extremadura in 2024. The TURN2X module is the first in Spain to produce e-methane using this technology. Its supply of renewable electricity, essential for the production of green hydrogen, is managed by Axpo and generated at plants developed by Aquila Clean Energy.

Model accelerates energy transition

Axpo Iberia CEO Ignacio Soneira said: "This agreement is a strong demonstration of the industrial feasibility of green hydrogen, measured against strict sustainability and economic criteria. Through initiatives like this, Axpo is actively contributing to the decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify sectors and providing guarantees of origin and traceability that comply with the new European regulations."

TURN2X CEO Philip Kessler added: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Axpo on this innovative project, which demonstrates how our modular and flexible technology can be deployed much more quickly than traditional mega-plants. As pioneers in e-Methane, we are excited to see this market begin to take off, providing a sustainable and easy-to-implement alternative.”

Supporting the development of green hydrogen in Europe

The agreement comes at a crucial time in the development of the green hydrogen market. According to the Spanish government's hydrogen roadmap, an installed electrolyser capacity of at least 4 GW is expected by 2030, with an estimated annual consumption of up to 25,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen by the industrial and transport sectors.

Today's agreement also sets a precedent for other companies looking to enter the hydrogen market. By offering a clear, traceable and feasible contractual framework, the financing and scaling of new projects can be facilitated from both an economic and regulatory perspective.
