Axpo feeds solar energy into the German grid for the first time

02.06.2026 – Axpo is pressing ahead with its expansion in the German renewable energy market: the ground-mounted solar power plants in Borgdorf-Seedorf (30 MWp) and Eisendorf (15 MWp) have been operational since May. With these projects, the Swiss energy company is demonstrating its expertise in the expansion of renewable energy and supporting the energy transition in Germany.

In brief:
  • In May, Axpo successfully commissioned the solar power plants in Borgdorf-Seedorf (30 MWp) and Eisendorf (15 MWp) near Kiel. With this commissioning, Axpo is feeding solar power into the German grid for the first time.
  • With a combined annual output of 45 GWh, the plants can supply the average annual energy consumption of 20,000 German households with renewable energy and save over 13,800 tonnes of CO2 per year.
  • The plants were designed to the highest standards in the photovoltaic market, with a focus on energy optimisation, sustainability and environmentally sound integration.
  • The projects underline Axpo’s position in Germany, a key market for renewable energy in Europe.

The ground-mounted solar power plants in Borgdorf-Seedorf (30 MWp)
and Eisendorf (15 MWp), near Kiel in northern Germany, represent a milestone for Axpo. The solar parks, which cover a combined area of 35 hectares, were commissioned in May 2026 and are already feeding their first energy into the German electricity grid.

With a combined annual output of around 45 gigawatt hours (GWh), the two plants will supply over 20,000 German households with solar power whilst saving 13,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to just under 6,000 flights from Paris to New York.

Both plants were designed to the highest standards of the photovoltaic market: energy-optimised, performance-monitored and seamlessly integrated into the environment.

A strong and concrete commitment to the environment

Axpo has incorporated a range of measures into the planning of its solar power plants to preserve local biodiversity and limit the plants’ impact on their surroundings. This comprehensive approach is based on ecological and landscape design principles, mitigation measures and sustainable management practices.

To strengthen ecological connectivity and diversify natural habitats, Axpo has protected traditional hedgerows in this project and planted new ones around the power stations. At the same time, new specific habitats for reptiles have been created and existing wetlands maintained.

In the immediate vicinity of the sites, Axpo has developed a compensation area of almost 5 hectares, creating favourable conditions for the reproduction, recreation and feeding of the species found there. This plot is maintained in collaboration with a local farmer, who manages the area as permanent pasture from April to the end of September without the use of fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides.

Germany, a key market for Axpo

These successes strengthen Axpo’s presence in Germany, a key market in its European growth strategy for renewable energy. Axpo is developing an integrated approach that combines expertise in development and construction, operational excellence, competitive energy solutions for businesses and concrete environmental commitments.

Antoine Millioud, Head of Axpo’s Solar Division, emphasises: “Germany is a key market for Ax-po. These projects underscore our commitment to the energy transition in Europe. We combine performance, innovation and sustainability to support local stakeholders in the long term.”
