Power plants in Europe

Together with its partners, Axpo operates over 100 power plants.

Our climate-friendly Swiss power mix comprises hydropower, biomass and nuclear energy with very low CO2 levels. As the largest producer of hydropower, and thanks to investments in biomass and fermentation plants, as well as hydroelectric plants, Axpo is by far the largest producer of renewable energies in Switzerland.

At international level, Axpo is increasingly focusing on wind energy and investing accordingly in locations that are technically and financially viable for this purpose.

Our wind farm portfolio includes facilities in France, Spain, Italy and Northern Europe. Axpo also holds an interest in the Global Tech I offshore wind farm in the North Sea off the coast of Germany. In the summer of 2015, Axpo announced the acquisition of Volkswind GmbH. Axpo is now in a position to leverage its expertise in the planning, project planning and construction of wind farms.

Power Plants in Italy

Axpo Group launched an important industrial plan to have its own production capacity in Italy, thanks to both the construction of the power plants as well as the purchase of production from third party companies.

Axpo has a combined cycle power plant in Italy, with a total of 1.800 MW of installed power (this amount is in relation to Axpo’s share). This plant is one of our greatest investments (about 1.5 billion Euros), but there has also been a great technological effort in the field of energy efficiency and in limiting environmental impact. Furthermore, Axpo has become a major player in long-term agreements when marketing energy generated from renewable sources: Axpo Italia’s portfolio currently includes 230 MW from wind generation and 240 MW from solar generation.

The Italian production sites are organized as single operative companies (Independent Power Producers). They are combined cycle plants with 760 MW of available power.

Currently working plants are:

  • Calenia Energia (Axpo’s share: 85%) in Sparanise (CE)
  • Rizziconi Energia (Axpo’s share: 100%) in Rizziconi (RC)
  • SEF (Axpo’s share: 49%) in Ferrara (FE)

In the renewable energy sector, Axpo, through the company WinBis SpA, manages the wind farm CER (the Renewable Energy Consortium) operations, 66 MW installed in Bisaccia in the province of Avellino.
