KKB 1: Start of refueling

11.05.2021 - Axpo is taking unit 1 of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) offline today for its annual refueling. After the approximately two-week shutdown, the plant will be ready for the next operating period.

The shutdown of unit 1 will end the production cycle that began on May 22, 2020. Since then, KKB 1 has generated around 3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 670,000 average four-person households.

During the two-week shutdown, KKB specialists will replace 20 of the total 121 fuel elements in the reactor core. In addition, recurring inspection work and system tests will be carried out. The 460 employees of KKB will be supported in the work by around 120 external specialists.

At KKB, measures continue to be in place to prevent the spread of the corona virus and to protect the plant's own and external personnel. Strict compliance with these measures is ensured.

During the shutdown process, water vapor is visible above the non-nuclear part of the plant (machine hall). There is no danger to people or the environment.

The refueling is under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI.
