Axpo signs a 10-year green power deal with GIG and Danone companies in Poland

Axpo is further consolidating its business activities in Central Eastern Europe: the company’s Warsaw-based subsidiary signed a long-term energy services agreement with Green Investment Group (GIG) and Danone companies in Poland (Danone) for a period of 10 years. Under the agreement, Axpo Polska will provide route to market and balancing services for a GIG-owned wind farm, with Axpo also acting as the power supplier of Danone. Thereby, Axpo Polska demonstrates its ability to play a key role in complex physical Corporate PPA structures in the Polish market.

Axpo to receive additional compensation for transmission grid infrastructure

The Swiss Federal Electricity Commission ElCom has issued decrees regarding the regulatory value of transmission grid infrastructure that was transferred from Axpo to Swissgrid in 2013. This results in additional compensation amounting to approximately CHF 100 million, which will have a one-off effect on the financial result of the Axpo Group for financial year 2020/21.

Axpo Holding AG General Meeting - shareholders approve dividend

The 20th ordinary General Meeting of Axpo Holding AG on 15 January 2021 approved the annual report and the annual financial statements for 2019/20, as well as all other requests. Jakob Stark, 62, was elected as the successor to member of the Board of Directors Roland Eberle, 67, who is retiring. The other incumbent members of the Board of Directors were re-elected for the 2021–2023 term. The shareholders approved payment of a dividend of CHF 80 million.

In the course of the morning, both units of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) were put back into operation following clearance from the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI). The two emergency diesels, in which an assembly deviation had been detected in the shock absorbers (parts of the engine mountings), were repaired.

Robust Axpo achieves a strong result in a challenging environment

The Axpo Group achieved a very good result in the 2019/20 financial year (1 October 2019 to 30 September 2020) despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The markedly positive result achieved as in previous years in the Trading & Sales business area was accompanied by solid contributions to earnings from the other business areas. Axpo benefited from slightly higher hedged electricity prices compared to the previous year and took advantage of the opportunities offered by volatility in the energy markets.

This morning both units of the Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) were taken off grid in a controlled manner. During an inspection within the framework of earthquake safety verification, two of six emergency power diesels were found to have an assembly deviation in shock absorbers (vibration dampers). This must be corrected.

The two Grisons municipalities of Cama and Grono, together with Axpo, have decided to dissolve the study consortium founded six years ago to optimize the use of the Moesa's hydropower. Due to a Government decision on the residual water remediation of the existing power plants in the Misox, the project is no longer eligible for approval.

Lukmanier Gallery: Agreement between KVR and Canton Graubünden

The existing gallery on the Lukmanier Pass road along the Santa Maria reservoir of Kraftwerke Vorderrhein AG (KVR) is to be extended by 320 meters. This will permanently protect the section of road from avalanches. KVR has agreed with the canton of Graubünden on a split of costs.

Partial re-cabling of overhead line at Klingnau Reservoir

Axpo plans to increase the voltage of its power lines in the Lower Aare Valley (Canton of Aargau) from 50 to 110 kilovolts in order to improve security of supply. Under the project, the line section from the Aare riverbank at Beznau to the substation at the Klingnau hydropower station will be dis-mantled and replaced with underground cabling. The region will benefit from sustainable energy supply and the ecological enhancement of the recreational area around the Klingnau Reservoir.

Axpo is building a ground-mounted solar plant on the industrial zone of the Altgass substation in Baar (Canton of Zug). The plant will go into operation in November and will produce renewable power for some 70 households in the region. The completion of the plant marks a further step in Axpo's expansion of its share in renewable energy in Switzerland.

Axpo underpins its role as a leading marketer of renewable energies in Europe: The company’s subsidiary for the Belgian market has recently signed an agreement for the purchase of the pow-er generated by a wind farm in Estinnes, in the region of Wallonia. The 82 MW wind farm owned by CGN Europe Energy produces around 150 GWh of renewable electricity per year with its 11 turbines and is Belgium’s largest onshore wind farm.

Axpo and EKZ increase security of supply in the Stäfa area

With the aim of continuing to ensure a reliable supply of energy in the Stäfa region, Axpo is currently laying an overhead line of around one kilometer in length underground. EKZ built a new, more powerful substation that connects Axpo's high-voltage grid with EKZ's medium-voltage grid. The EKZ-operated substation was commissioned at the end of May 2019.

Fewer pylons in Schaffhausen nature park

Axpo plans to increase the voltage in its power lines in the Schaffhausen region in order to improve security of supply. Under the project, the existing overhead line going through the Schaffhausen nature park will be taken down and replaced with underground cabling. A total of 70 pylons will be removed, which will greatly enhance the landscape in the area. Planning approval has been granted.

Strong operating performance – but earnings blunted by financial markets

The Axpo Group’s half-year financial results for 2019/20 (1 October 2019 to 31 March 2020) were influenced by two factors: a strong operating performance, which was up once again on the prior-year period, and the negative impact of volatility on the financial markets. The funds for the decommissioning and disposal of nuclear power plants (STENFO) had a particularly significant negative impact on results of CHF 389 million. Whereas earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) were still only slightly lower at CHF 329 million despite the Covid-19 crisis, the result for the period fell to CHF – 24 million.

Axpo and Green Investment Group extend PPA cooperation to Norway

Axpo Nordic reinforces its role as a leading marketer of renewable energy in the Nordics by concluding two more long-term route-to-market power purchase agreements (PPA) with UK-based Green Investment Group’s (GIG) wind farms Buheii and Tysvær in Norway. Currently under construction with commercial operation expected in the second half of 2021, the wind farms will provide energy to the Norwegian smelters of Eramet, a global mining and metallurgical group. Axpo Nordic is responsible for facilitating the corporate PPA between GIG and Eramet Norway through the balancing of the wind farms and managing the physical power delivery.
