Beznau nuclear power plant: Unit 2 refuelling completed

18.08.2016 - Unit 2 of the Beznau (KKB) nuclear power plant is back on grid as of today, Thursday, 18 August 2016. During the two-week shutdown, one sixth of the fuel elements were replaced on a rotation basis. With the reloading of the fuel core, the plant will now enter the next operation period.

Unit 2 of the Beznau nuclear power plant was taken off grid on 5 August 2016 for scheduled refuelling. In the past two weeks, 20 of the total 121 fuel elements were replaced and installed in the reactor core. In addition, recurring inspection work and integral system tests, as well as scheduled work on individual plant components, were carried out.

After approval by the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI, the plant will now take up full-power operation in phases. The plant should be operating at full load in about two days.

During the plant restart, steam will at times be emitted into the atmosphere from the non-nuclear section of the plant.
