The solar industry is growing fast and shows no signs of cooling down. Helped by the dramatic fall in photovoltaic prices of recent years, and the growing importance of climate-friendly energy generation, solar power has become an important growth market for Axpo.

Following Axpo’s entry into the wind business,  we accelerated our solar energy activities with the acquisition of French photovoltaic (PV) developer Urbasolar. Part of our strategy to profitably expand the company’s international business,  today Axpo operates along the entire solar energy value chain, from planning and construction to operation.

Various studies have estimated Switzerland’s PV potential at up to 67 TWh. As part of the nation’s Energy Strategy 2050, more than 40 per cent of Switzerland's total energy consumption (around 25 TWh) must be replaced by renewable energy sources. The expansion of PV, from installations in high alpine regions to those on industrial rooftops, is therefore set to play an increasingly important role in securing Switzerland’s energy future.
