Operational Technology (OT) refers to data processing systems and networks used in industrial operations. In contrast to Information Technology (IT)—which primarily encompasses office automation, traditional IT infrastructures, and private end-user devices—OT focuses on the control and monitoring of physical, often safety-critical processes. Examples include control networks of energy providers, IoT systems of railway companies, or emergency communication networks used by first responder organizations.

The key distinction lies in their purpose: while IT is centered around data processing, communication, and information management, OT is focused on direct interaction with machines, equipment, and infrastructure.

Since central operational functions depend on OT and failures can have serious consequences—such as for public safety or supply security—there are particularly stringent requirements in this area. Redundancy, fault tolerance, cyber security, and high availability are essential concepts in OT, differing significantly from the priorities of traditional IT.
