GenAI assistant "Lise" How we use it in our day to day

Generative artificial intelligence is changing ways of working in almost all industries. New possibilities are also opening up in the field of nuclear energy. We have set ourselves the goal of helping to shape this progress and showing that innovation is possible even in strictly regulated areas. The following applies: Innovation and safety requirements must be reliably combined. With the GenAI assistant "Lise", Axpo Nuklear has created a solution for precisely this purpose, which addresses the specific challenges of this industry and at the same time complies with the strict regulations in the nuclear sector. In this way, we are already making everyday life at all three Swiss nuclear power plants noticeably easier. We show the influence "Lise" has on the work of our teams.

In the nuclear sector, safety is the top priority. "Lise" is therefore operated exclusively in highly secure data centres within Switzerland and with comprehensive security precautions. All data remains in the possession of the power plants; there is no transmission of training data to third parties. This ensures that operational and company information remains under our control at all times.

"Lise" covers a wide range of functions. One of the central areas of application is the efficient and fast search of large documents. The GenAI Assistant makes information easy to find and immediately usable. This use case alone reduces the effort involved in searching for information and complex processing from months to hours. Thanks to the strict security precautions, self-classified documents can be connected to "Lise". And even for smaller tasks, the GenAI Assistant is a creative and competent companion in everyday life.

Lise has become an everyday companion for our colleagues: working with texts becomes more productive, reports can be created more efficiently, and checking and comparison steps are more consistent. Personal productivity increases – and with it the quality and speed of collaboration across departments.

A particularly appreciated feature is the integrated translator. Texts and documents are translated into over 80 languages in the shortest possible time directly within our own cloud in Switzerland. The data remains completely within the company, which ensures the confidentiality of sensitive content. At the same time, the original layout is retained, so that translations can continue to be used without additional formatting effort.

The translator thus offers a secure and economical alternative to external solutions. For teams with international collaboration, this creates a reliable basis for making information accessible quickly and consistently.

The successful introduction of new technologies always brings organizational challenges. Comprehensive change management and targeted measures to deeply integrate the new solution into the employees' everyday work are therefore essential. In order to choose the ideal means, a broad understanding of the processes and working methods within nuclear power plants is required.

As part of the change process for "Lise", we were able to counter various questions and reservations of the employees by building knowledge and trust. Through broad communication, an understanding could be created to use the application conscientiously and purposefully. The low hurdle due to the intuitive user interface also contributes to the adoption of the GenAI Assistant in everyday life.

We are already working on the integration of "Lise" into the internal document management systems and have achieved initial results. Especially in this area of application, the search for relevant information in large databases, GenAI will enable immense progress and increased efficiency in the future. For our teams, this means more speed in preparation, higher consistency in evaluation and better decision-making bases in daily operations.

"Lise" already shows today how security requirements and innovative strength can be combined. With the gradual expansion of additional systems and functions, the assistant will continue to have an impact on the operation of our three nuclear power plants – always with a clear focus on safety, compliance and efficiency.
