hydrone is Axpo Hydro Digital’s comprehensive service offering  for the compliant, safe and efficient use of drones in hydropower plants and others critical infrastructure assets. We support operators every step of the way, from initial consultation through to procurement and training, right through to operation, support and community engagement.

About hydrone

Drones open up new and versatile possibilities: rapid inspections, 3D models, monitoring and documented data to support decision-making  – whilst reducing the risk to staff and operations. hydrone ensures that you can utilise these benefits in a compliant, cost-effective and technically robust manner. We provide personal support across all service areas, including two customisable on-site visits per year. At the same time, we continuously evaluate new technologies and carry out several pilot projects to ensure your drone operations remain state-of-the-art in the long term.

Why hydrone?

  • Safety

We ensure safe, compliant drone operations and provide support with all regulatory requirements.

  • Focus on value creation

Your teams can concentrate on missions and data analysis and use, whilst we take care of administration, permits and support.

  • Cost-effectiveness

You reduce the need for additional administrative staff and cut external costs, such as those for helicopter operations or specialist inspection firms.

  • Best practice & network

You benefit from our community, tried-and-tested processes and the opportunity to exchange ideas with other users.

Specific use cases of drones

  • Inspection of structures and weirs
  • Inspection of riverbanks and water intakes
  • Inspection of aeronautical obstacle markings
  • Photogrammetry and 3D modelling, for example volume calculations following rockfalls
  • Routine inspections, including indoor inspections and thermography
  • Monitoring of environmental impacts, including erosion, bedload transport and gravel bars
  • Monitoring before and during streambed flushing operations, and in avalanche-risk situations

The hydrone all-inclusive solution

We assist you with registration, the classification of operations (Open / Special / Subject to Authorisation) and with obtaining the necessary permits (e.g. BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) / STS procedures (Standard Scenarios)). We also draw up the required operational documents (risk and safety assessments, operational manuals, checklists).

We can advise you on selecting suitable aerial platforms and sensor technology, such as infrared cameras or LiDAR systems (laser scanning technology). In addition, we can assist you with supplier selection, framework agreements and warranty claims, as well as with taking out suitable liability insurance.

Our modular theory and practical training courses are tailored to your specific use cases, ranging from basic certification to BVLOS training. We continuously incorporate new regulatory requirements and technological developments into our training programmes and cover them in refresher courses.

To ensure your drones are reliably ready for use, we assist you with commissioning, software updates, and the marking and registration of the devices. We support you with the authorisation to operate in geographical zones (geo-zones). In pilot projects, we also test new technologies to assess their specific benefits for your operations.

We provide all operational documents and act as your first point of contact (FPoC). For pilots, we handle first-level support (FLS) and coordinate second- and third-level support with the manufacturers. Claims management and assistance with repairs or replacement purchases are also part of the service.

As part of the hydrone community, you’ll benefit from regular exchanges of experience, best practice and continuing professional development. Regular meetings and informal, ad hoc exchanges promote practical knowledge sharing across the network.. A central platform also brings together documentation and flight routes.

Cooperation

  1. Initial consultation & needs analysis
  2. Risk and regulatory assessment
  3. Selection & procurement of suitable hardware
  4. Training of pilots & handover of operational documentation
  5. Operation, support & community integration
  • Personal support across all service areas
  • Two on-site visits per year (customisable)
  • Provision and maintenance of flight-route library / automated flight routes
  • Regular updates on regulatory changes

On request, we provide qualified pilots to fly on-site defined routes — e.g. for inspection, automated route flights or BVLOS checks. The service includes mission planning, flight route preparation, coordination with authorities (where required), data capture (photos, videos, thermography, 3D photogrammetry) and data processing.

Prices are based on the scope and complexity of the enquiry.

We offer one-day training courses for individuals and teams seeking to operate drones safely, efficiently and in compliance with regulations in a professional environment – from introductory level through to advanced practical training.

For companies wishing to use drones within their organisation, we can visit your premises by arrangement. The course content is tailored to the planned applications, the technology used and the operational requirements.

The training courses can cover theory, flight planning, practical exercises, safety and risk assessments, as well as the creation of checklists and operational procedures. On request, we can conduct training directly at your sites and using your drones.

Prices depend on the scope of the course, number of participants, training location and operational complexity.

What our customers say about the collaboration

«The drones motivate us as employees and pilots. Thanks to their easy handling and constant availability in the car, they are used regularly. The support provided by Team-hydrone, especially when setting up automated flight routes, also makes our work easier and more efficient.»
Arnold Flepp, Team Leader Construction/Dams, Axpo Hydro Surselva
«When I heard that the hydrone team wanted to organise a Switzerland-wide permit for BVLOS flights, I initially thought that this would be a major challenge, particularly due to the complex aviation regulations and the administrative work involved in obtaining the permits. But no, the hydrone team successfully overcame these hurdles. Well done!»
Arno Brantschen, Head of Electrical Maintenance & Operation Power Plants Mattmark AG
«The application support from hydrone is outstanding. We always received prompt and professional support when we had questions or problems, which saved us a lot of time and nerves. A real asset for our drone programme and our nuclear power plant.»
Lutz Lohmann, Project Manager Digital & Innovation, Axpo Power, Division Nuclear
«The drone is a huge relief for us, especially when monitoring stream beds, water intakes, buildings and avalanche situations. Thanks to hydrone's help in implementing BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight), our drones can now also be used for long distances without visual line of sight, which is a considerable asset.»
Thomas Zimmermann, Construction and dam monitoring team leader, power plants Sarganserland AG
