Beznau nuclear power plant: Start of refuelling in Unit 2

05.08.2016 - Unit 2 of the Beznau (KKB) nuclear power plant will be taken off grid for refuelling as scheduled tomorrow, Friday, 5 August 2016. With the reloading of the fuel core, the plant will be ready for the next operation period.

The scheduled outage of the nuclear power plant marks the end of the production cycle that began on 23 December 2015. Since then KKB 2 had reliably generated about 1.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity without interruption, which corresponds to the yearly electricity consumption of approx. 400,000 house-holds.

During the scheduled outage, 20 of the total 121 fuel elements will be replaced and installed in the reactor core. In addition, recurring inspection work and integral system tests, as well as scheduled work on individual plant components will be carried out.

When the plant is being shut down, steam will be emitted into the atmosphere from the non-nuclear section of the power plant.
