Axpo opens its first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden

12.02.2024 - The commissioning of Axpo’s first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden, announced today, marks the latest milestone in the expansion of its battery business. The 20MW/20MWh plant, connected to the electricity grid by local energy company Landskrona Energi, follows several projects in Switzerland and Europe. The new facility was officially inaugurated on 12 February 2024 at a ceremony attended by representatives from politics and business.

Axpo has been active in the development, construction and commercial optimisation of large-scale battery solutions for several years. Following the expansion of these activities to a number of markets across Europe, Axpo has now commissioned its first large-scale battery storage facility in Sweden, specifically in Landskrona in the south of the country. Meanwhile, the company continues to develop its battery storage systems business internationally. Axpo Group Head of Batteries & Hybrid Systems, Frank Amend, said: “We will continue to expand our storage activities over the next few years. The importance of large storage capacities is crucial in the course of the energy transition.”

Local grid stability

The new 20MW/20MWh lithium-ion based battery storage facility will be used to help balance electricity supply in the region and has been connected to the grid by Landskrona Energi, a local energy supplier. With 20 MW, around 4000 households could be supplied with electricity for one hour. Landskrona Energi CEO Johan Holmstedt said: “As a local power grid owner, it’s really satisfying to witness the installation of this battery storage facility. The cooperation with Axpo, the city of Landskrona and many others involved in such an important project went very smoothly indeed.”

Successful Inauguration

An official ceremony to commission the large-scale battery storage facility was held at the site by Axpo and Landskrona Energi on 12 February 2024. Chairman of the city of Landskrona’s municipal board, Torkild Strandberg, was among the guests from politics and business.

Mr. Strandberg said, “I’m delighted that we can contribute to the energy stability of our region in this way. Electricity consumption in Sweden is projected to increase significantly over the next ten to twenty years. This will require both new production and new measures to strengthen the power grid.”
