18.02.2026 | The planned wind farm development at Flumserberg will not be pursued further. Data from wind measurements conducted over more than a year have shown that the wind potential at the proposed site falls below the requirements for economically viable operation. Based on these findings, Axpo is unfortunately compelled to discontinue the project. The company will instead focus on several other locations — for example Wil SG (Boxloo), where a wind measurement mast will be erected in the coming weeks.
As is customary for wind power projects, comprehensive wind measurements were carried out at Flumserberg over a period of more than one year and compared with long-term reference data. Regrettably, the results indicate that the wind potential is below the threshold required for economically viable electricity production. Even under optimistic assumptions, the site would not yield sufficient energy output. On the basis of these results, Axpo has no choice but to terminate the project.
Axpo develops wind energy projects only where key prerequisites are met: economic viability, environmental compatibility, and meaningful integration into the region.
Cédric Aubert, Head of Wind Portfolio Switzerland at Axpo, comments: «Unfortunately, at Flumserberg one of these key requirements is not fulfilled — and therefore we are stopping the project. This reflects a core standard of Axpo: systematic assessment, honest evaluation, and taking responsibility. The decision is not an easy one, but it demonstrates that we stand by our principles. It is disappointing for the many people in the region who had high expectations for this project and were looking forward to the wind farm. We would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support.»
Despite the discontinuation of the Flumserberg project, wind energy remains a central pillar of Switzerland’s energy future, particularly with regard to winter power supply. Across Switzerland, there are numerous locations with strong potential. Existing installations such as Lutersarni (LU) demonstrate that, where conditions are suitable, wind energy can be successfully operated over the long term and in some cases has exceeded expectations for years.
Axpo is currently assessing several sites in parallel. These include projects at Dreibündenstein (GR) as well as in Waldkirch/Andwil SG (Tannenberg) and Wil SG (Boxloo). In Wil, a wind measurement mast will be installed in the coming weeks.
Axpo will continue to advance these projects with the same level of diligence that guided the decision at Flumserberg: fact-based, transparent and responsible. Further information on Axpo’s Swiss wind energy projects is available here.
