Axpo to build one of its largest solar plants in Spain

06.06.2023 - In Spain, Axpo begins construction of one of its largest solar plants to date in September 2023. The plant, with an installed capacity of 200 megawatts, is part of Axpo's ambition to develop ten gigawatts in Europe by 2030. As the largest Swiss producer of renewable energies, Axpo is thus making a contribution to the expansion of climate-friendly electricity production in Europe, from which Switzerland also benefits.

Axpo's ambition is to develop a total of ten gigawatts of installed solar capacity in Europe by 2030. In doing so, it is concentrating on those markets in which it has already been offering tailor-made customer solutions for years. This includes Spain, where Axpo has been active for 20 years and will now build one of its largest solar plants to date. With its in-depth expertise in the solar sector, Axpo can serve an important market in Spain.

The expansion of solar energy in countries like Spain is also relevant for Switzerland, as it contributes to climate-friendly electricity production in Europe and thus strengthens the security of energy supply in its entirety. Axpo is thus contributing to ensuring that sufficient electricity will continue to be available to meet Europe's needs in the future - including Switzerland's import requirements in winter. Axpo also intends to make greater use of its long experience in the solar energy sector and its huge expertise in various solar technologies in Switzerland: Thanks to regulatory relief, Axpo was able to launch its major solar offensive in Switzerland in autumn 2022.

In the last quarter of 2023, Axpo will begin the construction of one of its largest photovoltaic plants – 200 megawatts - in the area located in the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes del Tejar, all in the province of León, Castilla León.

This is a ground-mounted plant in which 365.000 solar panels will be installed on an area of 307 hectares. The plant can produce the annual electricity requirements of more than 76.000 Spanish households. Its development will involve more than 900 professionals. "The start of construction of one of our largest solar plants in the Spanish market is a major milestone for Axpo’s solar development business in Spain. Thanks to our existing know-how in the market and our solar know-how along the entire value chain, we are optimally positioned," says Antoine Millioud, Head of Solar Division of Axpo. Axpo's first solar plant in Spain is scheduled to go on grid in the end of 2024.
