Axpo assesses feasibility of wind farm in Rüthi and Sennwald

27.08.2025 - Axpo, in collaboration with the local municipalities of Rüthi and Sennwald and the political municipality of Rüthi in the Canton of St. Gallen, is assessing the feasibility of a new wind farm. The project envisions seven turbines, which could generate enough electricity to supply approximately 11,500 households. The primary objective is to produce renewable energy, particularly for the winter months, thereby contributing to energy security.

The project commenced with an open dialogue with the local community. On 25 August in Rüthi and 26 August in Sennwald, Axpo and the municipalities held public information events to present the proposal, answer questions, and facilitate direct discussions with experts from both the canton and Axpo. Attendees also had the opportunity to engage with the technology first-hand via the Axpo Wind-Mobile and to experience a 3D visualisation of the proposed wind farm.

A key factor in selecting this location is Axpo’s existing ownership of a suitable plot in Rüthi. The plan includes three wind turbines on Rüthi land, one on Altstätten land, and three on Sennwald land. Together, these turbines could generate around 54 GWh of electricity annually – equivalent to the average yearly consumption of 11,500 households.

Local voices

Irene Schocher, Mayor of Rüthi, emphasised: “We welcome the transparent assessment of the wind potential and the early involvement of our community. A well-founded basis for decision-making is essential to realistically evaluate the potential of a wind farm in our region.”

Daniel Berger, President of the local municipality of Sennwald, added: “Sennwald fully supports this project and sees the proposed wind farm as an opportunity to strengthen regional energy supply and actively contribute to the energy transition.”

Next steps: technical assessments

Following the information events, Axpo will begin technical preliminary studies and install a wind measurement mast in October 2025 to collect data on wind conditions and bat activity over the course of a year. These findings will form the basis for further planning and the economic evaluation of the project.

Cédric Aubert, Head of Wind Portfolio Switzerland at Axpo, stated: “We are actively advancing wind energy in Switzerland. Over 60 per cent of a wind turbine’s electricity output is generated in winter – precisely when it is most needed. The site assessment in Rüthi and Sennwald marks an important step forward.”

The project embodies the principle “By the region, for the region”: it offers both ecological and economic benefits, as local municipalities and residents will have the opportunity to participate in the project company and benefit directly from the operation of the wind farm.
