29.10.2025 – Axpo has reassessed its wind farm plans in the Rhine Valley. The municipality of Rüthi has decided to withdraw from the project, and Axpo will not pursue the sub-project within the designated wind development area in Sennwald. Axpo respects the decisions of the local municipalities, thanks all stakeholders for the constructive dialogue, and will consider next steps without time pressure, with a view to a secure and climate-friendly electricity supply. The focus now shifts to other projects in the canton of St. Gallen (Flumserberg, Waldkirch/Andwil, Wil).
In summer, Axpo, together with the municipalities of Rüthi and Sennwald, initiated assessments for a wind farm comprising seven turbines. The proposals were presented and discussed with the public at information events on 25 August 2025 in Rüthi and 26 August 2025 in Sennwald.
As part of a cooperative project approach and taking into account public participation and local feedback, the site assessment in Sennwald has been concluded. Axpo will not pursue development within the Sennwald wind suitability area and wishes to thank the municipality of Sennwald and all local stakeholders for the constructive exchange.
The municipality of Rüthi owns a plot of land that had been evaluated as a potential site for two wind turbines. The municipal board has now decided to withdraw from the project.
In light of this, Axpo is reassessing the Rhine Valley project as a whole. Axpo will continue discussions in the region and then determine next steps with due care and without time pressure.
Axpo remains committed to developing renewable energy projects with local partners that contribute to a secure and climate-friendly energy supply, particularly during the winter months. In the canton of St. Gallen, Axpo is currently progressing three further projects in Flumserberg, Waldkirch/Andwil and Wil. Transparent communication and cooperative engagement with municipalities, neighbouring communities and interest groups remain central.
