Beznau NPP: Unit 2 starts refuelling

04.08.2026 - Axpo today commenced the refuelling of Unit 2 at the Beznau Nuclear Power Plant (KKB). The outage will last approximately two weeks.

KKB specialists will replace 20 of the 121 fuel assemblies in the reactor core during the outage. In addition, scheduled inspections and system tests will be carried out. The more than 560 KKB employees will be supported by around 150 external specialists. The refuelling is conducted under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI).

During the shutdown of the plant, water vapour may be visible above the turbine building. This is a normal process and poses no risk to people or the environment. Due to the high temperature of the water in the River Aare, Unit 2 has already been shut down last Friday. This measure serves to protect the River Aare.

The Beznau Nuclear Power Plant produces around 6 terawatt-hours of electricity every year, covering approximately one tenth of Switzerland’s electricity demand. The two reactor units are regularly taken offline in spring and summer for refuelling or an overhaul. They then resume contributing to the electricity supply for around another year, particularly during the winter months.
