17.06.2025 - The Limmern pumped storage power plant in the canton of Glarus is one of the most powerful hydroelectric power plants in the country. Hikers in the region can now enjoy a new attraction: ‘Wasserwärts’ – Switzerland's highest and longest photo gallery. In a tunnel almost three kilometres long, it shows the beautiful and fascinating aspects of hydropower, the most important renewable energy source. Wasserwärts is complemented by background information on hydropower and electricity supply.
At over 1,800 meters above sea level and deep inside the rock, a new Swiss attraction is hidden away: ‘Wasserwärts’ – a unique photo exhibition about the fascination of hydropower. Axpo has created a very special exhibition experience in a freely accessible tunnel of the Limmern pumped storage power plant, combining fascination and knowledge.
Large-format images by renowned Swiss landscape photographer Markus Bühler accompany hikers through the impressive heart of hydropower over almost three kilometers. The official hiking trail from the mountain station of the cable car to Lake Limmern is now a spectacular journey through hydropower, energy and landscape. The result is a series of impressive images that showcase hydropower, Switzerland's most important renewable energy source.
The gallery is complemented by interactive information boards that provide exciting insights into the fascinating world of hydropower – from its beginnings and current challenges to the technology of the pumped storage plant. The exhibition is open to the public during the hiking season (approx. mid-June to October) and starts directly at the mountain station of the Tierfed-Kalktrittli cable car.
With around 60 plants, Axpo is the largest operator of hydropower plants in Switzerland. Including its shareholdings, the company produces around 11 TWh of electricity from hydropower each year, which corresponds to around one third of Switzerland's total hydropower production and underlines the important role of hydropower for security of supply.
Axpo employs around 550 people in the operation, maintenance, renovation and management of hydroelectric power plants, 120 of whom work in hydroelectric engineering. Axpo also offers services such as operation and marketing for third parties.
All photographs presented in ‘Wasserwärts’ as well as around 50 additional images and lots of further information are available in the online gallery.
