08.09.2025 – Axpo has decided to suspend the planned hydrogen production plant in Wildegg-Brugg, Switzerland. This follows the decision by a key green hydrogen customer to abandon plans for new hydrogen buses. Axpo is now evaluating new approaches for the Wildischachen site at Brugg in Aargau canton with its regional partners, while continuing to press ahead with its other existing hydrogen projects.
The head of Axpo’s hydrogen team, Guy Bühler, said: ‘We regret that the project cannot be implemented as planned. We are now evaluating further options with our regional partners.’ The use of hydrogen remains an important opportunity for the further development of sustainable mobility, he added. ‘We’re convinced that we need green gases for successful decarbonisation.’
The green hydrogen production plant was planned by Axpo to supply fuel via pipeline to local post bus fleet operator Voegtlin-Meyer’s filling station. Options for continuing at the Wildischachen site are now being evaluated by Axpo, working with Voegtlin-Meyer and local partner IBB Energie AG.
Key to sustainable mobility
Axpo will continue to drive its hydrogen activities forward. These include the Arv'Hy mobility project in France and a hydrogen production plant in Domat/Ems, the largest of its kind in Switzerland. This plant can produce up to 350 tonnes of green hydrogen a year and has already supplied its first customers. In addition, another plant is under construction in Uri canton which will supply the first hydrogen-powered passenger ship on Lake Lucerne. Guy Bühler continued: ‘These initiatives demonstrate the potential of hydrogen, not only as an energy source, but also as the key to decarbonising the transport sector.’
Networking the industry
Axpo is also focusing on cooperation and networking to further promote the rapid growth of hydrogen as a fuel. Through the MatcH2 platform, Axpo brings together various players in the Swiss hydrogen market to promote the development of a local hydrogen ecosystem. Such cooperation is crucial for creating the conditions in which the Swiss market can be reliably supplied with this sustainable fuel. Green hydrogen, biogas and other renewable gases are essential building blocks for a climate-friendly energy future. Axpo will continue to contribute its expertise in this field, actively contributing to decarbonisation and the energy transition.
